Doctor Who Episode Wins Nebula Award

Well it was written by Neil Gaiman, of course it did. The episode in question is The Doctor's Wife from the just gone Series 6 and my personal favourite episode by my personal favourite author. He's been winning awards like World Fantasy, Nebula, Hugo, Bram Stoker, Locus and many other awards since I was born. Literally. He won a World Fantasy Award the same year I was born.

He was, of course, incredibly humble about the whole deal and it happened to coincide with the weekend when  the Philadelphia Univeristy of the Arts gave him an honourary Doctorate.

Doctor Who is certainly no slouch in the awards department either, having being winning awards such as TV BAFTAs and Constellation Awards since 2006.  So putting the two together was like alchemy. It created pure gold! Here's hoping Series 7 will continue the legacy of episodes such as Blink, The Girl Who Waited and A Good Man Goes To War.

Rory & Amy's Last Day

As I'm sure you know by now, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are leaving Doctor Who this coming series. And today really does mark the beginning of the end. As I type this, the very last day of filming for the actors who have played Amy and Rory is underway.

When all's said and done, Amy will have been a consistent companion for two and a half series, meaning she'll beat first companion Rose Tyler's by about half a dozen episodes, though that's not counting Rose's later appearances. Rory's tenure as constant companion is a little more iffy, but I'm going to call it as Series 6, meaning he lasted as long as Martha Jones and Donna Noble and outlasted previous male companions Micky and Captain Jack, who never quite graduated to full time.

I'm sure it's a very emotional day on set for the power trio of Matt, Karen and Arthur who have helped push the Eleventh Doctor's tenure to dizzying heights of fame. Jenna-Louise Coleman will have big shoes to fill when she comes to the role in Series 7. I wonder if they've started filming her scenes yet? Also, IMDB says Coleman was in the Captain America film. If only I hadn't lent out my copy, I could check that...

Classic Who DVD Release Dates

Here we are again with the news of some more classic serials getting the DVD treatment. I've only been able to confirm that these are the Region One release dates, so Region 2 readers I'm sorry but if they're not available for preorder in your area already, they probably will be in a month or two.

First up is Second Doctor serial The Krotons, to be released July 2nd, brought up from the original July 10th date. It has the usual commentaries, documentaries and production detail subtitles these releases have, so if Troughton's your man, head on over to Amazon because it's available for preorder now.

Second is The Greatest Show on Earth, the last of the Seventh Doctor serials to get a DVD release. As well as the usual menagerie of features, there's also The Psychedelic Circus music video, deleted scenes and more. Also available for preorder now, this one drops on July 30th.

Finally we have First Doctor serial Planet of Giants which...is a bit complicated. See, it was originally written as a four parter, but producer Verity Lambert decided it was two long and forced the final two episodes to be smooshed together into one. This release has reconstructed the two episodes as close as it can to their intended form, and includes a documentary on the effort too. Available for preorder 2037...OK, so you can preorder it now, the street date is August 20th.

Hopefully that'll be enough Who to tide you fans of the classics over for the summer.

Caroline Skinner On Series 7

In the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who executive producer, Caroline Skinner talked about some of the upcoming episodes in Series 7.

Caroline reveals that the Russell T Davies-owned Dalek that she loaned for filming on the opener has a “a starring role in the climax.”

She carries on to describe the second episode, written by Chris Chibnall of Series 7 to have “the best episode title ever” and will be “the biggest VFX episode of the series”.

She then goes on to talk about the fourth episode of Series 7 that Chris also wrote, describing it as “a massive, rollercoaster ride of a sci-fi story.”

“It’s all about Amy and Rory’s relationship – full of warmth, love and a celebration of their time on the show. But don’t be fooled. Chris will scare you to bits with this episode!”

“It’s also the last one we’ll shoot with Arthur and Karen in Cardiff. Words cannot describe how epic this moment is.”

Steven Moffat On Series 7 & Beyond

Issue 447 of Doctor Who Magazine features an interview with Doctor Who executive producer, Steven Moffat, and he drops a few hints on Series 7 and even beyond.

Here are some of the teasers that The Doctor Who TV have found:
  • Rory and Amy are no longer regular travelers with the Doctor: “If he thinks he needs them, he just pops in on them,” but, “Each time they’ll get a little older.”
  • Moffat on killing off companions: “Even if Idon’t think I’ll do it…maybe I will do it!”
  • Moffat ponders, “If we did a UNIT story, would Martha be there?”
  • The Special Weapons Dalek will definitely appear in the opener
  • Moffat reiterates that the New Paradigm Daleks are an “officer class”
  • Can the question “Doctor Who?” be answered? “Wait and see”
  • We will find out exactly what Trenzalore is all about
  • “The Fall of the Eleventh” will also be resolved (perhaps not in Series 7 though)
  • Moffat is very keen that the order of the episodes can be swapped around this time
  • There will still be a story arc, but it will be “the opposite” of Series 6
  • Even though he said no more two-parters, they are still possible if the story requires them
  • Jenna-Louise’s companion will be different to the others and is “going to be a shock”
  • Filming will continue throughout the rest of 2012 and further into 2013 and beyond
